Vietnam’s Cam Ranh Bay is one of Asia’s finest deep-water ports, a fact known well not just to the Vietnamese but to the host of nations who have at one time or another occupied this South China Sea prize.  France, Japan, Russia and the United States have all at one time or another been based here, each successive occupying power making improvements to the Bay’s facilities.

What Really Happened at Tiananmen

A leadership struggle in the Communist Party led to bloodshed.

By BAO PU

Twenty years after Chinese troops crushed demonstrators in Tiananmen Square, new light has now been shed on the incident by the forthcoming memoirs of Zhao Ziyang. The former general secretary died in 2005, after living in forced seclusion for 16 years for supporting the pro-democracy movement. In those years of seclusion, he managed to record a testimony in audiotapes. His memoirs reveal that bloodshed could have been avoided in 1989.

China's economic reforms in the 1980s led to a rift in the top Chinese leadership between those who supported the reforms and those who opposed them. Vietnam paper banned over China

By Nga Pham
BBC News, Hanoi

A newspaper in Vietnam has been banned for three months for publishing controversial articles on China.

The Ministry of Information and Communication decided to suspend the Du lich (Tourism) bi-weekly for "serious violations of Vietnamese Press Law".

In a rare display of patriotism, Du lich ran a number of articles on the subject of territorial disputes between Vietnam and China.
